Lev ASTAKHOV arrived in France with his mother in the first wave of refugees, in March 2022. The 16-year-old boy did not know French at all, but he started learning it from the first days: he bought a collection of short stories in two languages ​​​​and read on a folding bed in the gym, allocated for the emergency accommodation of Ukrainian refugees. Three years later, Lev graduated from the Lyon Lyceum with an overall grade of "très bien", which by Ukrainian standards is equal to a gold medal. The medal for excellent studies was also presented to the boy in France: in September 2025 during a solemn ceremony at the city hall of the 6th arrondissement of Lyon. Lev is now studying law at the University of Lyon-3. Lyon TV spoke with Lev and, separately, with his mother Irina.
