In the early 1970s, when Volkswagen executives ordered them to "make a cheap, docile, and uneventful car," six crazy engineers locked themselves in a secret workshop after work and embarked on the biggest industrial smuggling operation in automotive history. The result: The first true Hot Hatch legend, which management said "Nobody will buy this, produce 5,000 and shut it down," but which sold 2.5 million units and invented its own class: the Volkswagen Golf GTI.
