Ford and General Motors spent tens of billions of dollars building electric trucks, battery factories, and EV platforms, dismissing anyone who raised concerns about charging, cost, or resale value. But in late 2025, Ford killed the all-electric F-150 Lightning and took a nineteen point five billion dollar writedown. GM followed with seven point six billion in charges and idled its flagship EV factory twice in three months. Between them and Stellantis, Detroit has now written off over fifty three billion dollars. So why are the same executives who called EVs inevitable now admitting that everyday drivers were right all along?
