Análise de ‘A visão das plantas’, de Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida

Professor explains plot, historical context, and other aspects that deserve attention in the work required for the 2026 Fuvest entrance exam “How can a human being who commits atrocities sleep peacefully?” According to literature professor Marta Medeiros, it was from this unease, cultivated after reading “Os pescadores” (1923) by Raul Brandão, that Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida wrote “A visão das plantas” (2019). The book is part of the required reading list for the 2026-2029 Fuvest entrance exams. Born in Angola in 1982, Pereira is the youngest writer on the list. With a poetic narrative, the author tells the story of Celestino, a violent slave trader who returns home to Portugal to live out his final years. Upon his return, he finds an abandoned and empty house, except for the plants he begins to cultivate. Without showing any guilt for all the evil he committed throughout his life, including murder, he lives with the indifference of the plants. "They don't care if the person watering them is someone who has done great good for humanity or their tormentor," observes the professor.
