Steve Tibbetts: Inside His Sonic World - A Deep Dive with Joel Harrison
Legendary guitarist and composer Steve Tibbetts joins Joel Harrison for a roving conversation about his singular approach to creating guitar soundscapes. For five decades he has crafted self-produced records from his Minnesota studio with percussionist Marc Anderson, works that often defy genre or easy description. Tibbetts discusses his sound-making process, his years with ECM Records, and his celebrated album Cho with a Tibetan singer. Full of humor and self-awareness, he invites us into his one-of-a-kind sonic world. About Steve Tibbetts Steve Tibbetts plays acoustic and electric guitar as well as non-Western instruments such as the kendang and kalimba. His music has been described as rock, jazz, ambient, experimental, and world music, though Tibbetts himself calls it “postmodern neo-primitivism.” His compositions often blend multiple genres within a single piece. On guitar, he uses a distinctive string-bending technique to imitate the sound of a sarangi, shifting seamlessly between ambient textures and electric distortion. He also incorporates field recordings, including footsteps on the track “Running” from Safe Journey and the chanting of Nepalese villagers on Big Map Idea.
