In Selçuk, Izmir's charming district, some of the Byzantine aqueducts built 1,500 years ago still stand tall, right in the city center next to the train station. Situated just a short distance away, sipping tea and coffee in the cafes next to the Byzantine aqueducts built to carry water to the Ayasuluk Castle and St. Jean Church on the hilltop is both a pleasure and a witness to centuries-old history. The Isabey Mosque, built 650 years ago by Aydınoğlu İsabey, is located below the St. Jean Church in the city. This magnificent mosque was built with block stones, marble, and columns brought from the ancient city of Ephesus and the Temple of Artemis, which were then in ruins. The Isabey Mosque, which offers eternal peace, is notable for its simplicity and ornamentation. Its spacious courtyard, surrounded by high walls adorned with ancient columns, creates a monumental appearance. Located on Ayasuluk Hill, below Selçuk Castle, is the St. Jean Church. According to Christian belief, St. John, also known as St. John, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ, was the martyr of the martyrs. They leave Jerusalem and come to Ephesus with Jesus' mother, Mary. It is said that St. Jean also wrote the Gospel of John here. He is buried on Ayasuluk Hill at the age of 100.
