The Court of Cassation has brought an end to the murder trial of Saman Abbas, the 18-year-old Pakistani woman killed in Novellara, in the Reggio Emilia area, in the spring of 2021. The judges confirmed the sentences handed down in previous trials: the life sentences for her father, Shabbar Abbas, her mother, Nazia Shaheen, and her cousins, Ijaz Ikram and Noman Ul Haq, have become final. The 22-year prison sentence for her uncle, Danish Hasnain, was also confirmed. The Supreme Court rejected the appeals filed by the defendants, who are held responsible for the 18-year-old's death. According to the judicial reconstruction, Saman was killed after she opposed the arranged marriage her family wanted and because of her life choices, which were considered incompatible with family traditions. The trial recognized the aggravating circumstances of premeditation and abject motives.
