Shirakami-Sanchi, a World Heritage Site - June 3, 2022 We took a private guided walk along the Aoike and Wakutsuboike Ponds. We were a bit worried about the waters of Aoike and Wakutsuboike Ponds being muddy after the rain, but... Aoike Pond was crystal clear, and we could even see the large beech trees and char at the bottom. Wakutsubo Pond was a little murky, but the way it was murky was incredible! Rather than turning brown, it was a murky emerald green, a truly mystical finish. Even the guide declared it a rare sight! We even managed to capture the call of the Ruddy Kingfisher, "kyororororororo." The guide's lecture in front of the Shirakami-Sanchi sign is a must-listen. It was high-quality, like a university lecture, and well worth the price (though Dido did charge, lol). We learned a lot about World Heritage sites, how they were selected, and the trees and plants we passed along the way. Strictly speaking, it's close to the World Heritage Site, but not the core area (it does enter Shirakami), but the atmosphere around the beech forest and Aoike Pond still gives off a World Heritage vibe.
