The Greater Malang region was originally an ancient lake. Ancient Lake Malang was formed through a series of volcanic events, including the massive eruption of a massive volcano that was originally stratovolcano-shaped (Bemmelen, 1949). This explosion resulted in the collapse of the volcano's summit. Over time, the upper end of the crater became blocked, forming a deep basin or massive caldera at the summit of the cone. During the early to mid-Pleistocene, this basin was still volatile and uninhabitable because its environment was filled with lava flows and cooled lava resulting from the volcanic activity of Mount Kawi, Arjuno, and ancient Semeru. The Pleistocene is a period in the geologic timescale that lasted from 2,588,000 to 11,500 years ago.
