In this article, I'm examining the İzmir Assassination Attempt, planned in İzmir when the Republic was only three and a half years old, and which, after its discovery, is remembered not only as an assassination attempt but also for the discussions surrounding the elimination of the opposition, in all its dimensions. The bombs, weapons, and a staggering 3,000 lira found under Ziya Hurşit Bey's bed in the Gaffarzâde Hotel on the night of June 14, 1926, constitute one of the biggest question marks at the heart of this case. This sum, considered astronomical for the time, was, according to the official narrative, intended for escape and payment to the assassins. However, the sheer size of the amount never dispelled doubts about its source and intended use. The assassination plot was devised to coincide with Atatürk's visit to İzmir, specifically at the bend where Hükümet Caddesi and Kızlarağası Han meet in Kemeraltı, where his car would slow down. The plan involved opening fire from two fronts – the Gaffarzâde Hotel and the barber shop beneath the Ragıp Paşa Hotel – with bombs to be deployed if necessary. Laz İsmail, Gürcü Yusuf, and Çopur Hilmi were the key figures, while Sarı Efe Edip acted as the coordinator. However, the plan was exposed by a letter of denunciation written by Şevki of Crete to Governor Kazım Dirik, and the course of history changed. The trials began with the arrival of the Independence Court in İzmir by special train. The president was Ali Çetinkaya, and one of the members was Kılıç Ali. The court became known in the public as the "Council of the Three Alis." In the process, where nearly 130 people were interrogated, not only the assassins but also former members of the Committee of Union and Progress and opposition figures were brought before the court. The trial of prominent generals of the National Struggle such as Kazım Karabekir, Ali Fuat Cebesoy, and Refet Bele made the political dimension of the case even more visible. Ziya Hurşit Bey's defense deepened the legal and political debates of the case. He admitted to planning the assassination but argued that he did not attempt to overthrow the constitutional order. Despite this, the court did not accept this distinction and sentenced 15 people to death. The executions were carried out on the night of July 13th to 14th. The question posed by Ziya Hurşit, the last person to be executed, "Is Kılıç Ali here?", has become one of the symbolic phrases of this case. Kılıç Ali's absence at the moment of execution, and even, according to the executioner's account, his crouching down to hide, is recorded as a powerful scene not found in history books but remaining in memory. The most controversial element of the case, the 3,000 lira issue, takes on a new dimension with Kılıç Ali's memoirs. According to Kılıç Ali, this money could have been a loan Ziya Hurşit received from İş Bankası shortly before the assassination. If so, the fact that this same money was later used as evidence to justify the execution makes the İzmir Assassination one of the most intense debates in the history of the Republic. Almost a century later, questions about the true purpose of this money and the extent to which the assassination was known still remain unanswered.
