It was Sage Bhardwaj who suggested that Shri Ram reside in Chitrakoot for fourteen years, as the place was peaceful, safe, and full of natural beauty. Later, when Bharata was on his way to Chitrakoot to bring back Shri Ram, he also stopped at Prayag to seek the blessings of Sage Bharadwaj. Furthermore, after killing Ravana, when Shri Ram, along with Sita and Lakshman, was returning to Ayodhya in a Pushpak Vimana, he also spent some time at the Bhardwaj Ashram to seek his blessings. Bhardwaj Rishi installed a Shivalinga in this ashram. This Shiva idol is still worshipped today. It is called Bharadwajeshwar Shiva. There are temples dedicated to Sage Atri and his wife Anusuya, Sage Yagyavalkya, Rinmochan, Papamochan, Satyanarayan, and various forms of the Goddess.
