Bases Agroecológicas de la Transición - Miguel Altieri
The Organic Plant Production Area of FAUBA presents: Dr. Miguel Altieri Agroecological Foundations of the Transition Brief profile of Miguel Altieri: A Professor of Agroecology at the University of California, Berkeley, since 1981 he has taught Agroecology as a scientific basis for the development of sustainable agricultural systems at Berkeley and several universities in Spain, Italy, and Latin America. He is currently Honorary President of the Latin American Scientific Society of Agroecology (SOCLA). Dr. Altieri's approach has focused on using ecological concepts as a basis for understanding the operating principles of agroecosystems. His work has contributed to promoting Agroecology as a discipline that develops the basic ecological principles for studying, designing, and managing sustainable agroecosystems—that is, agricultural systems that are simultaneously productive, conserve their natural resources, are culturally relevant, socially just, and economically viable. His main research focus has been on the role of biodiversity in managing stable agroecosystems in the face of pests. Many of his studies are therefore dedicated to understanding the effects of polycultures, crop rotation, and other management decisions in which diversification plays a role in enhancing biological control in agricultural systems. The application of these principles takes different technological forms depending on whether it involves small-scale farming systems or larger-scale commercial production systems. Based on his experience as a researcher, Dr. Altieri has published several books, including "Agroecology: Scientific Foundations of Sustainable Agriculture" and "Biodiversity and Pest Management in Agroecosystems," as well as more than 200 scientific articles.
