If you don’t know James McMurtry, he is and has been a staple of the Austin music scene and the entire Texas music landscape for decades. In my humble opinion he is also the rightful poet laureate of Texas. He reminds me of a brick layer with his furrowed brow and steady third eye, methodically laying row after row of piercing American dialogue to sticky grooves with open tunings, that stir my innards like fancy dancers at a pow wow. I can’t stay in the back of the room when he and his four piece band kick up the dust. I like to get front and center and dance myself into a hot mess. Who says long verses ain’t sexy?
