YouTube Tested My New Channel Differently Than I Expected

I built this new YouTube channel expecting Search to drive the early traffic. Instead, YouTube began testing it almost entirely through Suggested videos and Browse features. After one week, three videos and 3,473 impressions, Search had generated only 28 impressions and two views. Meanwhile, roughly 96% of YouTube’s testing came through recommendation surfaces. But the lesson isn’t that Search no longer matters. The real lesson is that views alone can give you the wrong answer. In Episode 4 of All About Strategy, I break down my first week of YouTube analytics and explain: • Why YouTube tested this new channel through Suggested and Browse • What YouTube traffic sources actually reveal • Why impressions are experiments rather than rewards • How reach, retention and subscribers measure different things • Why the video with the most views wasn’t necessarily the winner • What Episode 3’s lower retention told me • Why Episodes 1, 2 and 3 were performing different jobs • What I’m changing before publishing the next video • How to tell whether your real problem is packaging or retention This channel is a public experiment in building a YouTube strategy from zero—showing the decisions, data, mistakes and adjustments as they happen. The goal isn’t simply to get more views. It is to understand how YouTube learns who a channel is for, why viewers choose particular videos and what turns attention into a relationship. Open YouTube Studio, enter Advanced Mode and compare: 1. The video that received the most reach 2. The video that held attention best 3. The video that generated the most subscribers They may not be the same video—and that difference may tell you more than the view count ever could. Tell me in the comments what your traffic sources, retention and subscriber data appear to be saying. ▶ Watch the complete All About Strategy series:    • All About Strategy   ▶ Watch Episode 3:    • This Is Why Your First 10 Videos Matter   ▶ Subscribe to follow the experiment:    / @ivan.tobias   📌 FREE WEEKLY GROUP CALL Every Wednesday | 20:00–21:00 (GMT+2 / Europe/Madrid) Join me live to workshop your channel and connect with other creators. 🔗 https://meet.google.com/pwj-qrqa-pmj 📧: [email protected] #YouTubeGrowth #ContentStrategy #SmallYouTuber #YouTubeTips #CreatorEconomy
