México a Través de los Siglos is an ongoing audiovisual research and restoration initiative conceived and directed by visual artist Rafael Corzo, MFA. The project is dedicated to the scholarly study, technical preservation, and critical interpretation of Mexican history, cultural memory, and national identity through archival moving image. Established during the global pandemic as an expansion of Corzo’s studio-based artistic practice into the digital sphere, the project functions as a long-form cultural archive that situates music, cinema, documentary footage, and vernacular urban imagery within their historical, social, and political contexts. Each production is grounded in original research and historical verification. Archival materials undergo a supervised restoration workflow that may include high-resolution source acquisition, proxy generation, structural stabilization, denoising, artifact mitigation, dynamic range correction, chromatic balancing, supervised color reconstruction, and detail recovery. The post-production pipeline integrates professional non-linear editing systems, digital color management platforms, Blackmagic RAW workflows, proxy optimization tools, supervised frame reconstruction in Adobe Photoshop, and carefully controlled AI-assisted enhancement models. Tools such as Topaz Astra (Precise Mode) are used conservatively to recover degraded textures and improve facial and architectural clarity while preserving historical authenticity. All enhancements are manually reviewed to maintain fidelity to the original record. Beyond technical restoration, the process seeks to recover the visual atmosphere and tactile presence of historical imagery—allowing archival footage to regain spatial clarity and renewed visual life for contemporary audiences. Emerging generative visualization systems (including Seedream and forthcoming Seedance integration) are used selectively for clearly contextualized interpretive sequences where archival documentation does not exist. These editorial visualizations are transparently identified and do not replace documented historical footage. The goal of this workflow is not aesthetic novelty but preservation fidelity: safeguarding Mexico’s audiovisual heritage and rendering it legible for present and future generations. Through restoration and contextualization, historical imagery is reactivated within the global circulation of digital media, ensuring that cultural memory remains visible and accessible across time. Rather than privileging celebrity culture, the project foregrounds the lived experience of ordinary citizens—workers, families, public spaces, streetscapes, and everyday urban life—recognizing them as authentic protagonists of historical continuity. Music functions as a historiographic framework that situates imagery within its cultural moment. Mexico is not merely a nation-state; it is a civilization, a culture, and a shared historical memory. This archive approaches Mexico as an interconnected cultural continuum that provides historical consciousness, cultural continuity, and vision for the future. Corzo’s broader artistic practice spans ceramics, sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, moving image, and glass-blowing, exploring themes of memory, consciousness, migration, spirituality, and collective identity. Workflow and Tools This project is produced through a professional restoration and post-production workflow using tools that may include: Adobe Photoshop Adobe Premiere Pro DaVinci Resolve Cinema Grade Blackmagic Proxy Generator Lite Blackmagic RAW workflows HandBrake OBS CapCut Wondershare Filmora HitPaw iMovie SuperVideo AI-assisted tools are used conservatively and under manual supervision to support restoration and reconstruction while prioritizing authenticity, legibility, and preservation ethics.
