Price Paid - $500 Condition -75% (not counted in the score) Quality - 8.5 These speakers are nice quality and the cabinets are quite sturdy. There’s no flashy finishes or anything but you know instantly that they are solid built, well engendered speakers that mean business. The black laminate is peeling in a couple areas but that is likely from not being stored correctly. Sound - 9.5 These speakers provided me with about as much of a real theater experience, in my home. The soundstage is large and the highs are crisp but the real magic, in my opinion, resides in the mid-range. These speakers are easy to drive, easy to listen to at night volumes, two important speaker characteristics, especially when it comes to home theater and video games. Well done Ascend Acoustics! MSRP Rating - 9.5 These speakers, at their MSRP prices are very hard to beat. In fact, if I were building a new budget minded home theater, Ascend Acoustics will be my first stop. These sound easily as good or even better, than speakers costing twice as much. These are just flat out hard to beat for the money. Period. Aesthetics - 8.5 These speakers are about as basic looking as you can get. This is apparent right when you see them. The good new is, like HSU, Ascend appears to have put the vast majority of the budget towards making these speakers sound as good as possible, not towards the looks. With that said, they aren’t ugly either. Just a little basic for my taste. But I’m a dark theater, where these most likely end up, who really cares about looks:) Price Paid Value - 8.0 If the condition was better, they would have scored better but the holes drilled in the tops of the 170’s and the slight peeling of the black vinyl in some areas is holding me back here, slightly. $500 for LCR, bookshelf speakers and 3 stands was a killer deal. Whoever ends up with these speakers will end up with a great foundation for an amazing budget home theater.
