After a military defeat, thousands of men, women and children chose to leave for France rather than submit to English rule. The English thought this would be better than having them remain in Ireland, possibly causing trouble. This backfired however, when they some 50 years later the Irish joined the Jacobite uprising in Scotland. England then banned the recruitment of Irish soldiers to foreign countries, limiting the Irish fighting on foreign soil to only those few soldiers who could get there on their own. The woman portrayed in this song is in love with one such Volunteer, and the song records her various efforts to support him, and the extremes to which she is willing to go to do so. Of particular note is the verse where she describes dying her petticoats red. There are various explanations for the meaning of this verse, one being that red was the color of the Volunteer’s uniforms. The song is macaronic, meaning it’s in two languages – English stanzas and an Irish Gaelic chorus. The chorus translates to: Come, come, come my love Come quietly and peacefully Come to the door and fly with me, and may you go safely, my darling.
