The Prophet Muhammad established the mosque in the first year of the Hijra. The Prophet's Mosque was the second mosque to be built in Medina - which was known as Bethrib before the Hijra. The mosque, in its present condition, after centuries of expansion, contains the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad and the graves of the two caliphs Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and Umar ibn al-Khattab, as well as the homes of the Prophet's wives, in addition to the Rawda. It was mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari on the authority of Abu Huraira as saying that the Prophet Muhammad said, “ What is between my house and my pulpit is a garden from the gardens of paradise .” The mosque was built in 632 AD, next to the residence of the Prophet Muhammad - that is, 1441 years ago - but it has undergone many renovations and expansions since then. The largest of these renovations was carried out by Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, and it is still ongoing today.
