How was the electron discovered? Before the discovery of the electron, scientists believed the atom was indivisible. That changed in 1897 when J. J. Thomson performed a series of experiments using cathode rays. He observed that these rays: • Traveled from the negative electrode • Were deflected by electric and magnetic fields • Behaved like negatively charged particles From these observations, Thomson concluded that atoms contain tiny negatively charged particles.
