Proms 'Carmina Burana' with Collapsing Baritone
During the 1974 Proms season in London's Royal Albert Hall, André Previn conducted Carl Orff's 'Carmina Burana' in front of a capacity audience on a very hot August evening. The television lights made the place even hotter and caused baritone Thomas Allen to faint during one of his numbers. As luck would have it, Patrick McCarthy was in the audience and as he knew the piece well, he went backstage and offered to take over. He did so and completed the performance to tremendous acclaim.
