The year 1937 in Moscow symbolized an era when a black NKVD car at the gate of a residential building meant a person's irrevocable disappearance. The forced labor of millions of citizens formed the basis of a gigantic prison camp network stretching from Solovki to the Far East. Official propaganda diligently produced documentaries, projecting a glossy image of reform through honest labor, but behind the ostentatious facade lurked total control and pragmatic economic calculation. The main driver that filled the camps with new labor was the infamous Article 58 of the Criminal Code, which allowed for the stamping of guilty verdicts without a real investigation. New spots on the map of Siberia and beyond the Arctic Circle were transformed into isolated enclaves. NKVD logistics were controlled down to the smallest detail: prisoners were transported for weeks in wooden boxcars, completely cut off from contact with the outside world. The Gulag officially became an important part of the state budget, ensuring the fulfillment of gold, coal, and timber production plans. The large-scale construction projects of that era were built by hand—the wheelbarrow, crowbar, and pickaxe remained the primary tools of millions of prisoners. The empire's financial model was built on the basis of strict austerity, with food rations directly dependent on production quotas. A special place in the structure belonged to the sharashkas—secret research institutes and closed design bureaus. The coercive apparatus effectively exploited the latent intellectual potential of arrested engineers, physicists, and aircraft designers. Under constant pressure, outstanding minds designed cutting-edge Soviet aviation and weapons systems, while the discoverers continued to sleep on camp bunks. The true, hidden purpose of the camp machine extended far beyond the development of the taiga or the extraction of raw materials. The system acted as a massive social filter, deliberately breaking traditional ties and destroying thinking citizens, including intellectuals and technical specialists. Harsh pressure through hard physical labor, as in the case of Professor Dmitry Likhachev on Solovki, transformed society's leaders into faceless camp numbers. Declassified departmental archives, opened decades later, revealed dry accounting reports in which people were treated like mere industrial inventory. This historical echo, which undermined the intellectual foundation, created profound psychological trauma, changing the behavior of several generations to come.
