Diagnosing a Lean Condition EGT and Backpressure Prep with Reassembly

This series turned into a lot more than just a gasket change. The video contains a lot of info but I still have a few things that just didn't seem to fit in the commentary. Let me start by saying this is in no way the one way to obtain a back pressure reading. In fact, I would recommend against drilling into a 200+ dollar exhaust manifold for a back pressure reading. Why? DSM's (and many other vehicles) are equipped with an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve. Since it recirculates exhaust gas and that is what we are trying to measure, it makes for a great candidate. Add to this that you can purchase an EGR block off plate for 10 bucks and you have a cheap alternative that is easily reversible. Of course, if you already have an EGT gauge installed, you can pull out the probe and wire in a MAP sensor to get your reading. I drilled the holes in this video for you, the sake of argument and to gather information using EGT gauges. If you try to log your back pressure, you need to insure you have a "buffer" of some sort. Think about it, each exhaust pulse will make for a rapid and very choppy reading. The way to solve this is use enough line or create a chamber to buffer out the pulses. The shorter the line the choppier the signal will be. Back Pressure can tell you a lot about your selection of parts hence the reason I have wanted to take a reading for some time. I took a turbo off a Diesel, slapped a smaller exhaust housing on it and bolted it to a 4G63 so what do you think the outcome will be. Robert
