What kind of refrigerator do you have in your kitchen? It's most likely a classic compressor refrigerator. The two inventors and material scientists Dr. Maximilian Fries and Dimitri Benke want to fundamentally change the way food is cooled with their cooling technology. Instead of compressors, as used in conventional refrigerators, they use magnets to generate cooling. How does it work? The two inventors discovered the physics behind it during their studies. At the core is the so-called magnetocaloric effect, in which certain materials heat up and cool down under the influence of a magnetic field. This physical principle inspired the inventors Max and Dimitri to their invention, which is supposed to be more efficient and environmentally friendly than conventional cooling systems using gas.
