After the monumental success of the inaugural Money in the Bank match at WWE WrestleMania 21, it was inevitable that the company would look to repeat the contest. Unlike the original match, this installment of Money in the Bank represented both RAW and SmackDown, with three superstars qualifying from each brand. For RAW, Ric Flair, Rob Van Dam, and Shelton Benjamin were able to qualify for MiTB. On SmackDown, Bobby Lashley, Finlay, and Matt Hardy qualified as well. These six men were set to meet at WWE WrestleMania 22, with the ultimate prize being the coveted briefcase. The superstar who emerged victorious would have a guaranteed title opportunity in their possession, and considering that the only MiTB winner up until that point (Edge) had cashed-in successfully, that was a pretty lucrative prize.
