"Horikiri" east side of Tokyo, has been known since the Edo period as a famous spot for Japanese iris, having received and cultivated famous iris, Hanashobu (Sword-leaved Iris), from Matsudaira Sakingo Sadatomo, a hatamoto (a direct retainer of the shogun) known as Shoo (the Old King of Irises), who cultivated them. Famers in Horikiri area sold cut irises throughout city of Edo (the former name of Tokyo), and the garden was frequently depicted by leading ukiyo-e artists of the time. A hatamoto was a high-ranking samurai directly under the shogun, and Matsudaira Sadatomo also held an important position in the shogunate, possessing culture and knowledge. Sadatomo, along with his father Sadatora, dedicated 60 years to breeding irises, developing approximately 300 varieties of famous flowers and giving them intelligent names. About 20 of the varieties cultivated by Sadatomo from the wild iris, Nohanashobu, the original species of sword-leaved Iris, still exist today as Edo-style ancient lines and are preserved and cultivated at this Horikiri Iris Garden. Many varieties of Japanese irises were created from these Edo-style ancient lines as Edo lines. Furthermore, these Edo lines were cultivated and developed in Higo (present-day Kumamoto Prefecture) and Ise (present-day Mie Prefecture), leading to the development of unique lineages known as Higo-lines and Ise-lines. lines have neat, clean flowers favored by Edo samurai and are suitable for outdoor viewing, while Higo-lines and Ise-lines varieties are more suitable for indoor viewing. Higo-lines varieties are said to be luxurious and masculine, while Ise-lines varieties are considered slightly more elegant and feminine. Furthermore, these varieties are distinct from the Nagai (Nagai Ancient lines, cultivated independently in the Nagai region of Yamagata Prefecture. This variety has a simple, rustic appearance, closely resembling the original wild sword-leaved Iris. Japanese sword-leaved Iris are cultivated varieties developed from this single wild species, Nohanashobu, the original species of sword-leaved Iris. It is said over 5,000 varieties have been cultivated to date, and that around 2,000 varieties still exist today. Horikiri Iris Garden is a valuable iris garden that showcases approximately 200 excellent varieties and 6,000 plants in Horikiri, a place historically significant to Hanashobu, and is open to the public. @Hello MENO's 5-Minute Stroll Through Japanese Scenery is a collection of video clips that s showcasing gardens, shrines, and temples that evoke the nature and history of Japan, along with flowers and plants in best time, all in 5 minutes. @Hello MENO is a national licensed English tour guide based in Tokyo, Japan. @Hello MENO possesses not only deep knowledge of Japan's historical buildings and gardens, but also expertise in beautiful Japanese flowers and plants, such as cherry blossoms.
