The results indicated it was the oldest in Eastern Japan, built around the end of the 3rd century. The city began a new investigation in 2020 to enhance its value as a historical site. The precise shape of the tumulus, including its total length of approximately 62 meters, was determined. Furthermore, experts conducted a new investigation using modern archaeological research methods, based on the burial artifacts unearthed in the initial investigation. As a result, the tumulus was found to have been built approximately 50 years earlier than previously thought, dating from the first half to the middle of the 3rd century. Matsumoto City Cultural Properties Division, Section Chief Yosuke Tada: "In terms of era, it's the time of Himiko's Yamatai Kingdom, as it's mentioned in school textbooks. The Kofun period is often defined as the period after the construction of the Hashihaka Kofun in Nara Prefecture. However, it has been discovered that the Koboyama Kofun is an older tumulus than the Hashihaka Kofun." According to experts, the Koboyama Kofun is positioned as having been constructed around the same time as the first tumuli ever confirmed in archaeology. It may have known Himiko of Yamatai... Matsumoto City Cultural Properties Division, Division Chief Yosuke Tada: "Looking at the pottery, it's not pottery that has been in this region since ancient times or earlier.
