Instead, it walked into one of the most brutal urban battles of the 20th century. At the city of Khorramshahr, lightly armed Iranian marines and fanatical Pasdaran militia — the future Revolutionary Guards — turned narrow streets into a killing ground for Iraq's tank-heavy forces. A battle both sides expected to last days dragged on for weeks, cost some 7,000 casualties, and stalled the entire invasion. Poor planning, a fatal misreading of Iran's new regime, and Soviet-inspired armored doctrine had turned Saddam's war of choice into an eight-year quagmire.
