Why NSW School Rankings Are Becoming Harder to Find (PNO)
In this video, we break down something that has been becoming more noticeable around NSW schools and HSC information. When parents start researching schools, one of the most common things they look for is academic performance and rankings, because it gives a clearer picture of how students are actually performing over time. But in practice, that information isn’t always as easy to find as expected. In some cases, school HSC rankings are missing or labelled as “PNO” (Permission Not Obtained), which means the data isn’t publicly displayed. This raises a few interesting questions around why that happens, whether it is intentional, and what it means for families trying to make informed decisions. The video also goes through how HSC rankings are calculated, what they do and don’t tell you about a school, and why they can still be useful even though they are not a perfect measure. At the same time, it looks at some of the limitations of relying only on rankings when choosing a school, and why context still matters. Ultimately, the goal of this video is not to say one type of school is better than another, but to highlight how information is presented (or not presented) and how that can influence decision-making for parents and students.
