Shakespeare: Now Is The Winter Of Our Discontent - Henry Irving (1898)
Sadly this represents one of the worst preserved recordings of a classical actor. Recorded on a wax cylinder, Irving's dynamic range from declamatory to more introspective meant that the wax cutting was uneven and so surface noise takes over whenever he goes quiet. Recorded along with a handful of other monologues in Edison's home studio in Norwood on May 9th 1898. Other recordings from that session have fared better over time.
