Making A Massive Viking Fleet for Tabletop!! - Slaget Vid Nissan
Building the Battle of Nissan Follow the project here: https://www.eriksvedang.com/slaget-vi... This is the first chapter in a three-part series documenting the creation of a Viking tabletop wargame inspired by the historic naval battle Slaget vid Nissan, fought here outside our hometown Halmstad, Sweden. This project transforms a legendary clash of nearly 400 Viking ships into a playable miniature wargame, a large-scale diorama, and a massive tabletop gaming board. Supported by Region Halland, and developed by an artist, illustrator, and game designer, the series combines historical research, fantasy terrain building, and practical hobby craftsmanship into one ambitious tabletop world. In this first episode, we begin the journey by exploring scale, design philosophy, and early construction techniques for 10 mm scale Viking ships. Using accessible materials such as XPS foam, toothpicks, barbecue skewers, thin wood veneer, fabric, leather string, and PVA glue, we develop fast and affordable methods for scratch-building entire fleets suitable for epic naval battles. Tiny Model Ships – Scratch Building & Terrain Craft This episode focuses on creating tiny model ships optimized for speed, durability, and tabletop readability. These techniques are perfect for: Viking longships Fantasy naval terrain River and coastal battles Diorama environments Mass battle tabletop games Learn practical scratch-building workflows, kitbashing approaches, and low-cost hobby solutions that allow large fleets to be built without expensive model kits. Viking Wargaming Miniatures – Epic Scale Battles Alongside ship construction, the project explores Viking wargaming miniatures in 10 mm scale, designed for massive shield walls, naval landings, and cinematic battlefield scenes. Painting, army basing, and efficient workflows for painting hundreds of miniatures for historical and fantasy tabletop systems. This Trilogy Will Include Dozens of Viking ships Hundreds of Viking miniatures A huge gaming table with sea terrain, coastlines, rivers, and land features Original wargame rules and narrative scenarios The project is ideal for fans of tabletop terrain, miniature wargaming, diorama building, and games such as Frostgrave, Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer, Age of Sigmar, Mordheim, and historical wargames. A fully realized battlefield built for playability, storytelling, and epic scale — where history meets tabletop imagination.
