1996 Volvo Penta SX M Shift Cable Replacement

I know the video is lacking all the details, but you get the point hopefully if you're considering this job. The control box throttle arm comes off by removing the plastic cover, then undoing a center 19 mm nut. Don't lose that white plastic plunger. Without that, you can't increase throttle in neutral at start up. Conceptually it isn't a hard job. It's just awkward trying to see things and getting your hands on things. My control box was still hanging between the gunwale and the inner lining with the seat in the way. And I was in and out of the boat many times tugging, and then pushing the cable. As long as you try and copy the cable routing with the same length cable you'll be ok. Be sure to securely attach cord to the shifter end so that when you remove the old cable you can fish the new one back through the same path. I think the job would be much easier with 2 people (one pushing the cable, the other pulling on the attached wire or cord). If you can't easily feed the cable through the transom tube, use dish soap. Works like a charm. My cable sheathing was a little more robust than the original cable. So, there was more friction trying to force it down the tube. Don't use grease or oil because it will degrade the transom tube. Make sure you secure the transom tube well above the waterline. It's just air pressure keeping the water from entry. If you put the opening of that tube below the waterline, you'll be taking on water. Be gentle with that transom tube. I don't know how it is sealed as it passes through the transom. Something tells me that would be an unpleasant job to replace. Extremely hard to get to deep in the bilge with the engine in the way. I marine greased everything I could including the shift linkage and cable. I double nutted the cable adjustment at both ends using the nuts off the old cable so that vibration would not back them off. I also dabbed a little liquid vinyl on the threads just to prevent nuts from falling off (overkill). You don't want to be looking for nuts or suddenly be unable to put the boat in gear on the high seas. The cable was 13 ft 10 inches. I ordered a 14 ft JZGRDN Universal Marine 33C Throttle Shift Control Cable Part # ABA-CABLE-14-GY from Amazon. As of today it is $50.20 cad.
