#OS38 - História da Ópera: Jean Baptiste Lully

Let’s explore the fascinating journey of Jean-Baptiste Lully, the Italian who shaped French opera and earned the title of "Master of Music to the Sun King." The story begins with Pierre Perrin, who, alongside Robert Cambert, founded the Académie d’Opéra, proving that the French language and music could compete with Italian opera. Their first production, Pomone (1671), was a great success, but financial problems led Perrin to lose control of the institution. At that moment, Lully seized the opportunity and obtained a monopoly on opera in France from King Louis XIV. Thus, in 1672, the institution was renamed the Académie Royale de Musique, becoming the country's leading musical reference under his direction. We will explore Lully's rise—from his arrival at the court of Louis XIV, his participation in the iconic Ballet de la Nuit (1653), his partnership with Molière, and how he revolutionized theater and music. His talent and vision gave birth to the tragédie-lyrique, a new operatic genre that uniquely integrated music, dance, and narrative, reflecting the grandeur of the Sun King’s reign. Lully composed nearly one opera per year until his death, solidifying his legacy in the history of French music.
