From Chains to Shadows : The Forgotten Story of Afro-Iranians
#zanzibar #kenya #eastafrica #blackhistory #usa #iran #panafricanism #israel #usa "When you picture Iran, what comes to mind? The modern Islamic Republic? Or perhaps the ancient Persians? But there's a whole other story within Iran's borders. While Persians make up the majority, a significant portion of the population – around 40% – is made up of diverse ethnic groups. And among them, in the south of Iran, lives a community many are surprised to learn about: Afro-Iranians." "The presence of Black Africans in Iran is a history that often goes unseen, even within Iran itself. These aren't people whose darker skin is a result of climate; they are descendants of Black Africans from East Africa. How did they get there? Through the vast Indian Ocean trade routes, a network connecting East Africa, the Middle East, India, and even parts of East Asia. Sadly, many arrived as enslaved people, primarily from a region on the East African coast known as Azania, or 'Zanj.' They were sold by Omani slavers to the Middle East and India." "Slavery in Iran wasn't solely based on race. Many enslaved people were also Georgians and Circassians from Europe. However, as access to European slaves diminished in the 19th century, the demand for enslaved Africans grew during Iran's Qajar dynasty. These individuals were often forced into labor-intensive jobs like fishing and agriculture, which explains the concentration of Afro-Iranians near Iran's coast. Some served as soldiers or domestic workers for the wealthy. While some Iranians prefer to call them 'servants,' the reality was that men were often made eunuchs, and women became concubines. It's also important to remember that not all Black Africans in Iran were enslaved. Some came as free men, working as sailors or pearl divers. Slavery in Iran was formally abolished in 1929." "Today, most Iranians of African descent live in three specific provinces. Many carry last names that reflect their ancestors' origins, such as 'Zanzibari.' Their integration into Iranian society is a complex story. Some have seamlessly integrated, speaking Farsi and local languages, and participating in interracial marriages. Others maintain distinct cultural boundaries, with limited intermarriage and a caste system: Derzade, Ghulam, and Nukar. The Derzade are considered the highest caste, believed to be descendants of free Black Africans, while the Ghulam and Nukar are seen as lower castes, typically descendants of enslaved Africans from Zanj." "Afro-Iranians have made significant contributions to Iranian culture, most notably in the development of Bhandari music, a staple of southern Iran. Their history is a fascinating and vital part of Iranian culture, but it's often overlooked or forgotten. As historians rediscover this past, it's crucial that we don't separate Afro-Iranians from Iranian society. Many in the community identify simply as Iranian, seeing terms like 'Afro-Iranian' as a challenge to their identity. They have been a part of the country for generations, and their history should be recognized as an integral part of Iran's overall story." "The story of Black people in Iran is a testament to the complex and interconnected histories of Africa and the Middle East. It's a story of resilience, cultural fusion, and the ongoing struggle for recognition and belonging. By understanding this often-overlooked chapter of Iranian history, we gain a richer and more nuanced understanding of Iran itself."
