Thick smoke from Canadian wildfires projected to impact West Michigan

Michigan has dealt with wildfire smoke before, but the fires that are producing the smoke this time around are a lot closer to West Michigan than in previous years. "This is a case where it's coming down from Superior National Forest in that Arrowhead Region in Minnesota and southern Canada," Ernie Ostuno, the lead forecaster at the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, said. "It's coming directly at us so it could be pretty thick." Northwesterly winds are allowing for the smoke to drift into West Michigan, and stable air ahead of a cold front will bring this smoke down to the ground. "It's going to trap that smoke close to the surface," Ostuno explained. "It's almost a perfect storm of bad air quality happening Thursday."
