"God said, 'Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness.' So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them, and it was very good." — Genesis 1:24-31. In five days, God created everything. And in all those moments, he spoke in the same way. Let there be. Let there be. Let there be. Singular. Direct. A command that creation obeyed. And then humankind arrives. And something changes. God doesn't say that humankind exists. He says: LET US MAKE. Plural. In the entire creation narrative, this is the first time that God speaks in the plural. The first time that the act of creating includes internal deliberation. A conversation within God himself before acting. In the Christian tradition, that "let us make" points toward something that the New Testament will fully reveal. That God is in Himself a communion of persons. That the Trinity is not a later theological complication. IT'S IN THE FIRST CHAPTER OF THE BIBLE. And the most revolutionary statement: In the image of God. Not in the image of animals. Not in anyone's trash. In the image of God Himself. And at the end of the sixth day, God looks at everything He has made and says something different than on all the previous days. Not good. VERY GOOD. And the only thing that changed between the fifth and sixth day is you. That's who you are to God. Not average. Not good enough. Very good.
