I rewatched Saga of Tanya the Evil – Youjo Senki ahead of the second season, and after several years, I realized something: I remembered Tanya's battles, magic, and madness... but I had forgotten how interesting the philosophical conflict underlying this story was. In this first part of my rewatch, dedicated to episodes 1 through 6, we analyze Tanya's birth, her life before reincarnation, and above all, her relationship with the mysterious Entity X. On one side, we have Tanya: logic, rationality, materialism, efficiency, and an almost absolute faith in systems and rules. On the other, we have Entity X: faith, spirituality, and the belief that when human beings are stripped of their certainties and pushed to the brink, they inevitably end up seeking God. But Tanya has no intention of giving up. Her plan is simple: understand the rules of the military system, follow them to perfection, advance their career, and finally achieve a peaceful life behind the scenes. Too bad the more efficient Tanya proves to be... the more the army decides to send her on the worst missions. 😅 We also talk about the numerous references to 20th-century military history: the First World War, air superiority, control of the skies, radar, and encrypted communications, which inevitably bring to mind cryptographic warfare and the Enigma machine.
