Debbie Hepplewhite explains the purpose and range of Alphabetic Code Charts for English
Debbie promotes that any ‘understanding’ of the complexities of reading and spelling in the English language starts with the notion, helpfulness and use of ‘overview Alphabetic Code Charts’. Debbie’s charts are very informative and strongly support teacher-training and the provision of ‘phonics knowledge and understanding’ in the classroom for as long as this may be required – whether for initial teaching or ongoing support. The English spelling system is complex and historic – evolved from the alphabetic codes of multiple languages’ spelling patterns. Thus, English has ended up with the most complex alphabetic code in the world! In creating overview Alphabetic Code Charts, Debbie realised the need for various designs for different users and purposes. In this video, Debbie explains the differences in the range of charts and suggests who might benefit from them. Debbie has also designed a free phonics programme available online for all ages. See https://phonicsinternational.com to learn about this comprehensive body of work validated by the Department for Education in England and used successfully in many countries across the world.
