Putin made this statement during a plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), responding to an open letter from Zelensky requesting direct talks. Putin emphasized that the purpose of the meeting, in his view, would have no real impact on resolving the conflict. He stated that the main focus should not be a symbolic meeting, but rather on finding a long-term agreement. In his statement, Putin said, "I don't see the point in the meeting," as he believes such talks would only benefit one party without producing concrete solutions on the ground. He explained that what is needed now is a long-term agreement, not a temporary agreement that lasts only a few months. Putin also stated that before a direct meeting, the parties needed to first find a substantive solution through technical work and more in-depth negotiations. He further mentioned the experience of previous agreements, which he said did not work as expected, making Russia cautious about opening a new dialogue without certainty of an outcome. In his statement, Putin also assessed that Zelensky's open letter contained several statements that he considered harsh, thus not creating a conducive atmosphere for direct dialogue.
