Changan Global Testing Season 2026 🇨🇳🇹🇭 Changan Thailand took us to test drive electric vehicle technology capable of operating in extremely cold temperatures, down to -32 degrees Celsius, on icy surfaces – Ice Drive – traversing snow-covered terrain. This year, media representatives from various countries, including Europe, Russia, and ASEAN nations such as Indonesia and Thailand, were invited to experience cutting-edge electric vehicle technology, particularly driving on icy, snow-covered surfaces. Six Thai media representatives were selected for this extreme trip, led by Toey from Autolifethailand, Ko from Thansettakij, Off from TSuit Review, Pang and Ay from EV GIRLS, and myself, Uncle Tom from CARINNER. We traveled to Yakeshi, a county-level town under the administration of Hulunbuir City in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, approximately a one-hour drive by car, to the Yakeshi Proving Ground Charging station for today's activities. This was a collaboration with Changan Automobile in China. The final day of the "extreme" activity saw temperatures plummet to -32 degrees Celsius with occasional winds. It was so cold, we wanted to beg for mercy. Most of our time was spent on a vast open field covered in ice and a white landscape. Only a large central tent served as a resting and preparation area, powered by four heaters for warmth. Naturally, this area attracted a large crowd – foreigners, Thais, Chinese, and Muslims alike. For today's test drive, the most interesting model was the new NEVO Q05, soon to be sold in Thailand. This electric B-SUV is 100% electric, manufactured at Changan's Thai factory, and offered at an accessible price point. It comes equipped with modern technology, incorporating Changan's SDA (Simple Automotive Development) innovation. The test drive, of course, took place on a completely icy surface, unlike a snow-covered road or an ice skating rink. Slalom driving allowed us to experience the vehicle's handling and traction control firsthand. The traction control system prevents skidding during acceleration and while driving. The stability control system helps the vehicle easily maneuver around obstacles, turning left and right. The speed and precision of the modern electronic systems under SDA technology ensure good vehicle stability, even at speeds within the vehicle's limits on icy surfaces (40-50 km/h). The NEVO Q05 can even handle wet surfaces like this. This is comparable to our road conditions in Thailand, where heavy rain makes roads slippery, especially on surfaces coated with diesel or mud, which can easily lead to accidents. The responsive stability control and driving assistance systems help reduce accidents and minimize damage, making driving much safer. Another model worth mentioning is the DEEPAL S07, driven on icy surfaces. The vehicle fully showcases its advanced technologies. Acceleration, turning left and right, the traction control system, and the launch assist allow the S07 to confidently display its newly improved design in China. Regarding the vehicle details, I will provide more details on the improvements and developments later. I can say that the options have been upgraded based on customer requests, making it more user-friendly and stylish. As for the Changan G318, a box-shaped vehicle with REEV technology, we had the opportunity to drive it at higher speeds on a circular track to observe the intelligent driving assistance systems under SDA. The technology incorporated makes it ideal for cold-weather patrol driving. It looks handsome and stylish for extreme outdoor activities like this. Another thing I'd like to commend about all three models we tested is the heater system. Even with an outside temperature of -30 degrees Celsius, the interior of all models remained very warm. You could easily stay inside for a day if the lithium battery didn't run out. However, the lithium battery still needs improvement, particularly in handling extremely cold temperatures. Data shows that driving lithium-ion electric vehicles in cold weather requires more energy per distance to generate heat for the heater and maintain the battery temperature at around 20 degrees Celsius. Of course, Changan also features its "Microcore" high-frequency pulsed heating technology, the world's first of its kind. This technology delivers excellent performance in extremely cold weather, even at -30°C, raising the battery temperature by 20°C, resulting in a 50% increase in power output and a 15% reduction in charging time. It effectively minimizes performance degradation at low temperatures, enhancing the BMS (Battery Management System) capabilities in EVs. Furthermore, Changan Automobile is also preparing to use Sodium Batteries, developed jointly with CATL, in its new vehicle models. Sodium batteries offer superior performance in cold weather, lower costs, and greater environmental friendliness.
