The collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between the 30 MLB owners and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) is set to expire after the 2026 season. After a bitter series of negotiations prior to the 2022 season, where the owners implemented a three-month lockout that effectively froze free agency, the owners are again looking to use a lockout to gain leverage in the upcoming CBA negotiations. The owners have been looking to implement a salary cap in MLB for years, and another salary cap proposal will likely be at the heart of the next CBA talks. The Player's Association has thoroughly rejected a salary cap in past negotiations, arguing that it would lead to decreased compensation for players and create less incentive for teams to spend money in free agency.
