Christopher Nolan has once again placed Homer's Odyssey at the center of the conversation. Perfect material for a great film… but also a good excuse to return to the original poem. Because no film, series, comic, or video game can completely replace the experience of reading The Odyssey. An adaptation has to decide what Polyphemus looks like, what Penelope's face is, how the sirens sing, and what Ithaca looks like. Homer, on the other hand, gives us the words and allows each reader to construct their own journey. In this video, we return to Homer's world to talk about Odysseus, one of the most intelligent, contradictory, and unsavory heroes in literature; about his encounter with the Cyclops Polyphemus; about Penelope and the deception of the loom; about Telemachus growing up in the shadow of an absent father; and the true meaning of all those monsters trying to keep the protagonist from his home. Because The Odyssey isn't just about traveling. It's about remembering why we want to return. It speaks of identity, the passage of time, family, the temptation to give up, and that personal Ithaca we all pursue, even though we know it might not be the same when we arrive. This video serves as a continuation of our journey through The Iliad and The Odyssey, but it can also be viewed independently. We're not going to lock Homer in a glass case or argue for six hours about the exact translation of an epithet.
