Why do we need “H2” steel?
H1 steel has been the foundation of the #spyderco Salt series of knives for decades. It is impervious to rust, which makes it great for those working in wet environments, especially saltwater (which will ruin most steels). The problem with H1 is that it has disappointing edge retention. Recently, Spyderco has been making Salt series knives in LC200N, and has announced a forthcoming Salt knife in Magnacut steel. These options are nearly as corrosion-proof as H1, but with better edge retention. Now H1 steel is being discontinued by the manufacturer and replaced with H2. Why do we need H2 when we’ve got Magnacut? (Hint—it’s an issue of geography.)
