Contractors have started laying the final wearing course on the Great East Road upgrade in Lusaka, as work continues on other sections of the project. The road is being widened from four to six lanes and reconstructed from the ground up, with new subgrade and structural layers laid to the required standard. The works form part of a wider government-funded programme to rehabilitate and upgrade roads across the capital city. The Great East Road stretch, from the Munali traffic circle to the airport roundabout, is being carried out at an estimated cost of K800 million. The project is intended to improve access to Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, ease congestion on one of the city’s busiest corridors and provide more durable infrastructure capable of handling increased traffic in the years ahead.
