Russia confirmed that one of its warships fired warning shots at a British-flagged sailing vessel. The incident involved the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich and a British-registered sailing vessel. The incident occurred approximately 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight, outside British territorial waters. According to the British Ministry of Defense, the shots were not directed at the sailing vessel. The British stated that the warning shots were fired after attempts to communicate with the civilian vessel were made. Russia previously claimed to have provided several warnings before taking action. The frigate's crew reportedly fired signal flares and sounded an audible warning. However, the sailing vessel continued its movement toward the Russian warship. Therefore, the frigate's commander decided to fire warning shots using the ship's small arms. British defense sources suspect the Russian warship may have been in a restricted maneuvering situation, prompting its crew to take precautionary measures. The British vessel reported the shots were fired from a distance of approximately 450 meters. No casualties or damage were reported in the incident. The vessel continued its voyage after the incident. The Royal Navy then dispatched the patrol vessel HMS Tyne to inspect the vessel and ensure the crew's well-being. Another British warship, HMS Mersey, was also reportedly monitoring the movements of a Russian frigate in the area. The British government emphasized that the incident was an isolated incident and unrelated to any other military operations. The statement referred to the British raid on the oil tanker Smyrtos a few days earlier. The tanker was suspected of being part of a Russian shadow fleet used to evade international sanctions.
