The Lake District | Red Pike, Steeple, Scoat Fell and Pillar via Dorehead Screes #mosedale
Hi Everyone Welcome back to my channel, thank you so much for taking time to stop by. Today's walk takes in four of the bigger mountains in the Lake District in arguably one of the best areas of the National Park. I have been looking to do this walk for a while now but have been waiting for a prefect weather window as it is one you would definitely not want to do if there was any chance of there being no views. On a busy bank holiday Saturday I set off early for Wasdale Head. Arriving at the free National Trust car park just before the hotel and bar we found a parking spot and set off on our merry way, not before though we put £5 in the collection point at the bottom of the cart park. Whilst the masses headed right for the Sca Fells, we set off left, going behind Ritson's Bar and the farm and then turning left to go over the little old pack horse bridge over Mosedale Beck. The path takes us through a little wooded area where you can take a short detour through a gate to have a look at Ritson's Force Waterfall. Well worth it. Back on the main path we continue in to the heart of the Mosedale valley before eventually coming to a sheepfold by the river. It's here where we turn left to look up the hill and our ascent route of Dorehead Screes. It does look more daunting than it actually is. It's tough, I wont lie, but if you take your time, check your foot holds and hand holds then you will make it up. You can either follow the scree chute all the way up or there is the opportunity to do what I did and around two thirds of the way up head on to the grass to the right. Here you will pick up a path as it begins to flatten out at the top. From the col between Stirrup Crag on Yewbarrow and Red Pike, we turn right and follow the good steady path up to the first Wainwright of the Day, Red Pike. Here we get fabulous views over to Yewbarrow, the Scafell Massif, and Pillar. Leaving Red Pike behind, we carry on the short walk over to Steeple. What a stunning mountain this is. Standing in front of you along a short ridge, its a stunning looking work of art and the short 15 minute trip across to it's pointy summit offers amazing views over the Ennerdale valley and the Buttermere mountains. Retracing our steps along the ridge from Steeple we arrive very quickly at Wainwright number three for the day, Scoat Fell. There are two, Little and Great, but it's little that is the actual Wainwright summit. There is a small cairn balanced on the wall that marks the highest point, however there is some rocky outcrops a little further along the edge that offer the best views. From here we head to Pillar taking in firstly, Black Crag, then dropping down to Wind Gap before the short scramble up to Pillar's summit plateau. Whilst the trig point marks the summit, please make sure you have a wander over the the north edge to get spectacular views of Pillar rock and down in to Ennerdale. From Pillar we now head down along the ridge heading for our exit route back in to Mosedale, the top of Black Sail Pass. On the way make sure you take the two minute detour over to Looking Stead. The views from here in to Ennerdale and over to Hay Stacks, High Stile, High Crag, Grasmoor and many more are second to none. On reaching the large cairn at the top of Black Sail Pass, turn right for the long but very pleasant walk back down the Mosedale valley and back to the start. From the top of the pass though, please make sure you look over to your right to Dorehead Screes and wander how the hell you got up there, it looks absolutely mental. As always, if you have any questions about this route or anything in general about hiking in the lakes please pop it in the comments and I will reply All the best and happy hiking Dave
