Can This Tent Handle a Frozen Ridge? — Winter Camping Stress Test
In this episode, I test the NightCat 2-P tunnel tent along a narrow snow-covered ridge. The focus is on the factors that matter before I ever spend a night inside - particularly site selection, ground conditions, and how those factors compound with cold, gloved hands. This location was specifically chosen to be narrowly within the design limits of this tent while leaving little margin for setup error if conditions deteriorate. For non-freestanding tents, the ability to achieve solid stake placement is critical, and the frozen, rocky ground here makes that far from guaranteed. Cold temperatures, wet snow, and gloved hands further reduce tolerance for mistakes. The purpose of this series is to put both gear and myself through difficult conditions, so I understand what we're capable of before it truly matters This is not a torture test and not a failure video. It’s a real-world cold setup evaluation built around the factors that actually determine tent performance in winter and shoulder season: • Site selection • Ground conditions and snow cover • Cold air movement and drainage • Shelter vs exposure • Setup choices that affect warmth, condensation, and stability Gear used in this video: Nightcat 2-person Tunnel Tent - https://nightcat.com/products/1607037... ................................................. ................................................. I’m an environmental professional, and this series looks at tents through that lens — not marketing claims, not lab specs, and not conditions a tent was never designed for. If you camp, backpack, or overland in shoulder season or winter, this series will help you make better decisions long before temperatures become a problem.
