The Final Class 442 Scrap Move Passing Through Harrow & Wealdstone - 29/07/21

Video: The last ever Class 442 Wessex Electrics (442415 & 442420) units are seen being hauled through Harrow & Wealdstone by GBRf 66722, 73102 & 73128 (the first clip was from onboard my train there passing it by Wembley Yard & Willesden PRDC). 442415 can be seen with its new AC traction fitted, however because of its new regenerative braking system being inactive 442420 (with its original DC traction) and two Class 73s were used to apply brake force, as with some of the previous scrap moves. This of course was following the decision announced by South Western Railway (back in March 2021) to axe the 442 refurbishment program, despite most having their new Vossloh Kiepe AC traction equipment fitted during the 2020 lockdown as well as the new SWR interiors. This was due to the drop in travel caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and Angel Trains' decision to scrap them. Over multiple nights and early mornings the scrap moves have taken place from Bournemouth depot to Wolverton works for component stripping then the coaches were taken to Sims Newport Docks for scrapping via road, although some of the earlier scrap moves went to Eastleigh. This sadly marks the end of the 442 fleet with only a driving trailer of 442401 being saved for preservation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank You For Watching!
