Restoring A 20+ Year Old Thermoform Kayak I Found On Facebook
I found this crusty 23 year old Perception Sonoma 13.5 on Facebook Marketplace last week listed for $450 down from $600. At $600 it seemed to high for the current market, especially for the shape it was in, but at $450 my interest was peaked. I've been a fan of these early Thermoformed Perceptions ever since I bought one for my wife back in 2006. They were light weight at sub 40lbs, and paddled a little more like a sea kayak as oppose to the more recreational Eddyline Equinox or Hurricane Tampico. I decided it would be worth checking it out in person if nothing else for Nostalgia sake. When I got there and looked it over I wanted to back out. It was crusty and literally every piece of bungee or deck rigging was toast and needed to be replaced. I made an offer of $300 and was ready to walk, but at the last minute they took the offer and I was left with a serious project on my hands. After a few hours of hard scrubbing and polishing I was able to see the potential. Once I got the new deck rigging and paddling installed it all came together and the final product was better than I could have imagined! I was not able to paddle it just yet because I'm still in a walking boot from foot surgery, but thankfully my good friends and paddling partner Ethan Ebersold was in town, so I let him be the test pilot. It was fast sleek and light as a feather. A great kayak for someone looking for a fitness kayak without a bunch of moving parts or extra weight. Curious what you guys think? Was it worth it?
