First Time Hearing Angelina Jordan – "Back to Black" | She's Only 10 Years Old?!

Today I'm reacting to Angelina Jordan's cover of Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black." Taking on an Amy Winehouse song is no small task. Amy had one of the most distinctive voices of her generation, so anyone who attempts one of her songs has some incredibly big shoes to fill. What makes this performance even more impressive is that Angelina was only 10 years old when she recorded it. Of course, you can still hear a little bit of childhood in her voice—and that's exactly how it should be. At 10 years old, she doesn't need to sound like a grown woman. What amazed me wasn't the maturity of her voice—it was the maturity of her technique. Her breath control, phrasing, pitch, and the way she bends notes are all incredibly polished. She sings with the confidence and musical understanding of someone far beyond her years, and that's what makes her performances so special. Musically, the arrangement stays fairly simple. The piano drives the song with a steady, almost staccato feel, while the strings and percussion provide just enough support without taking attention away from the vocals. And that's exactly how it should be, because Angelina's voice is unquestionably the star of the performance. This was a beautiful version of a great song and another reminder of just how gifted Angelina Jordan is. Now I'm even more curious to hear something recent. After listening to several of her performances as a child, I really want to hear how her voice has matured over the years and how she's grown as an artist.
