π¨ CANADIAN SENIORS: Your Bank Account Freezes When You Die β Unless You File This One Free Form
The day you die, the bank freezes your account. The moment it's told you've passed, any account in your name alone is locked β and your spouse cannot touch a single cent of it, not for the funeral, not for the mortgage, not for groceries, until the estate is settled and often probate is done. The money is sitting right there, and they're locked out β sometimes for months. In this video I show you exactly why it happens, what freezes and what doesn't, and the one free form you can fill in this week that sends your money straight to the person you love β skipping the freeze and skipping probate. And if you're the one already living it, I'll show you what the bank will still pay, even frozen. I'm Jake Morrison. For fifteen years I worked inside Canada's retirement, tax, and benefits system β the pensions, the paperwork, the rules that quietly govern a senior's money, and what happens to it when you're gone. I'm not a lawyer and I'm not here to frighten you; I take the rules written to be missed and lay them out in plain English, so nothing about your money β or your family's β ever catches you off guard. π Everything I cover on this channel β what freezes and what doesn't, the beneficiary and successor-holder forms, probate, the CPP death benefit, and the exact words to use with your bank and family β is in one plain-English guide: The Canadian Seniors' Money Playbook. π https://jakemorrison.gumroad.com/l/Pl... β± CHAPTERS 0:00 β The day you die, your account freezes 0:58 β Who I am 1:29 β Eleanor's story: locked out of her own money 3:19 β Why it freezes β and what actually locks 3:37 β Joint accounts: not frozen (they pass to your spouse) 4:24 β The joint-account cautions (Quebec, parent + child) 5:23 β The one free form: name a beneficiary 6:03 β TFSA: name your spouse "successor holder" 6:35 β The trap: an out-of-date form beats your will 7:47 β Gordon's story: the ex-wife who got the RRSP 8:44 β "I have a will" is not enough 9:04 β What probate actually is 9:54 β The CPP death benefit 11:15 β Your action steps 13:08 β Already frozen? What the bank will still pay 13:59 β Recap 15:05 β Subscribe π WHAT THIS VIDEO COVERS β THE FREEZE: when the bank learns you've died, any account in your name ALONE is frozen; pre-authorized payments stop; your family can't access the money for the funeral or bills until the estate rep provides a death certificate and, often, probate β WHAT DOESN'T FREEZE: a JOINT account with right of survivorship generally passes straight to the surviving co-owner β so for a couple, making the everyday account joint is one of the simplest, biggest protections β TWO HONEST CAUTIONS on joint accounts: Quebec has a special temporary-freeze rule (talk to a notary), and a parent + adult-CHILD joint account can be pulled into the estate and cause a family fight β get advice for that one β β THE ONE FREE FORM: on registered accounts (RRSP, RRIF, TFSA) you can name a BENEFICIARY β the money then passes DIRECTLY to that person, skipping the frozen estate AND probate. For a spouse's TFSA, name them "successor holder" so it rolls over seamlessly. The form is free β THE TRAP THAT UNDOES IT: a designation only works if it's filled in AND kept current β an out-of-date form (an ex-spouse, someone who's died) generally BEATS your will. Check what's actually written on each account today β A WILL IS NOT ENOUGH: a will doesn't stop the freeze or give fast access β it's often what has to go through probate first. Probate = the court process that confirms your executor; it's slow and costs a fee. Beneficiary + joint tools sidestep it β CPP DEATH BENEFIT: a one-time payment the estate can apply for to help with costs β it isn't automatic, so make sure your family knows to claim it β ALREADY FROZEN? Banks will often pay the funeral home directly from a frozen account (and sometimes probate fees / final taxes) β bring the death certificate and the funeral invoice and ask β οΈ DISCLAIMER General information for Canadian seniors β not financial, tax, or legal advice, and I'm not affiliated with any government body.
